Question Title Optus details iPhone plans
Asher Moses
July 3, 2008 - 1:36PM

Optus has announced comprehensive plans for the upcoming 3G iPhone including an option to buy the handset outright on a pre-paid basis.

On pre-paid, the 8GB and 16GB models will cost $729 and $849, respectively. Optus is offering $30, $40 $50, $70 and $100 cap plans.

The pre-paid handset can be unlocked for use on other mobile networks for an $80 fee.

For post-paid, the cheapest iPhone plan from Optus is $19 a month with $50 worth of calls and texts and 100MB of mobile internet data. On top of this, for the 8GB model, the handset itself costs $51 a month on a one year contract and $21 a month on a two year contract.

For $79 and no upfront cost (for the 8GB model on a two year contract) customers receive $550 worth of calls and texts and 700MB of mobile internet data.

The largest post-paid plan is $179 a month and includes $1500 worth of calls and texts and 1GB of mobile internet data. The handset itself is free if customers choose a 24-month contract or $23 a month for the 8GB version on a 12-month contract.

There are a plethora of different post-paid plan options depending on the model (8GB or 16GB), the length of the contract (one or two years) and whether the customer wants a cap plan or a pay-as-you-go plan.

Full pricing details for post-paid and pre-paid can be found here and here.

Those who connect to a two year plan before the end of August will receive unlimited free web browsing for the first month. Pre-paid customers also receive a "start up bonus" including $400 credit and 1GB of internet browsing.

Optus, Telstra and Vodafone will all start selling the iPhone from next Friday.

Telstra's two-year iPhone plans start at $30 a month with an upfront cost of $279 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB model.

Those who opt for an $80 a month plan will receive an 8GB iPhone at no cost, while those on the $100 a month plan could get either the 16GB or 8GB models at no cost.

Telstra has yet to announce a detailed breakdown of its iPhone plans and refused to say whether it would sell the iPhone on a prepaid basis.

Vodafone has yet to announce its pricing plans.

"We're still holding some cards close to our chest with iPhone with more announced closer to launch," Telstra spokesman Peter Taylor said.
