Question Title HOW-TO: Installing Third-Party Apps On Your iPhone / iPod Touch
There are many visitors out there who have recently become the proud, new owners of shiny, new iPhones and iPod touches over the holiday season. To all of you: welcome! It's a wonderful sort of brotherhood. :-)

While you are surely getting much enjoyment out of your new Apple devices, there are far more ways to do so than merely those that Apple has provided you. You can "jailbreak" your iPhone or iPod touch and install a wealth of third-party, "native" iPhone applications with a fair bit of ease and rather little risk. Interested? Lifehacker has posted a rather thorough, illustrated guide that explains the process in full for those who may want to "reach beyond."

While this is good stuff to be sure, it's worth reminding everyone that Apple will be releasing an official iPhone development kit to third-party developers in February. This will bring "official" third-party iPhone applications to the platform which can be installed without the need to hack your unit in any way. Of course, many of these applications will have a price attached to them. We are anxious to see how the situation will unfold.
